Making our own facial is easy to do – we’ll just need to have some all-natural ingredients on hand. These ingredients are easy to find and are inexpensive to purchase at our local grocery store.  The trick is to have these ingredients readily available at home so we can give ourselves a homemade facial once a week.

Now, before we are able to apply our homemade facial scrub, we need to take off all our jewelry. Please pay close attention to removing any earrings we might have on as some of the natural substances we will be using do not react well with metal jewelry.  Let’s smooth all our hair back from our face by using a headband and if we do not have one, we can use an old bandanna. Using an old bandanna might actually be a better choice as we don’t have to be worried about getting it dirty from our facial scrub. Now that we have our hair out of the way, let’s wash our face with a normal cleanser to remove all traces of makeup, and be sure that when applying our facial masks, we follow all the instructions to the book. Don’t forget to set a timer, it will help us remember when to remove the facial scrub from our skin.

Here are some great facial recipes we can try at home:

Milk and Cinnamon Facial: This facial consists of four ingredients that we are most likely going to find already in our refrigerator and kitchen cabinets. In a bowl, mix one tablespoon of milk, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, one tablespoon of honey, and one teaspoon of vanilla. Spread the mixture onto our face and leave it on for 15 minutes.  Then rinse it off well with warm water.

Egg and Almond Oil Facial: This facial is made with a combination of two basic ingredients: one egg and one teaspoon of almond oil. Mix the two ingredients in a bowl and apply the scrub to our face. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse it off well with cold water.

Cucumber and Mint Facial: A cucumber and mint facial is just what our skin needs to be rejuvenated. You will need a blender for this one and four simple ingredients to make this mask come together. Into the blender, put half a cucumber, five mint leaves, one tablespoon of Greek yogurt, and one tablespoon of dry milk. Blend it well and leave this mixture on your face for 15 minutes, then rinse your skin well with warm water.

What are you waiting for… now go do your facial!

What is a facial scrub and why should you use it?

Facial scrubs are also known as exfoliators. They tend to be a thicker and more concentrated formula used to cleanse the skin. They contain micro particles to mechanically scrub the skin and help loosen and remove the top layer of dead skin cells. When used properly, they should leave our skin noticeably smoother with just one application. Like all exfoliation, it is a nice treatment for both acne and wrinkles because it encourages the surfacing of newer and younger skin cells. Using a facial scrub before using wrinkle cream or facial, acne treatment can also make the treatments more effective as it allows the treatments to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin instead of being wasted on the dead skin cells sitting no top that often block absorption.

Unlike fruit acid peels that work chemically to loosen dead skin cells, facial scrubs uses gentle abrasion to correct skin issues and gives the skin a polished appearance. The results we’ll get get depend greatly on how the ingredients of the scrub, how often we use it and how much pressure we apply when we use it.

Can you use a facial scrub if you have acne prone skin?

This is a hard question to answer. There are so much information out there that say “yes”, and yet there are others that say “no”. I personally believe that you should be able to use facial scrubs even if you have acne prone skin. Using facial scrubs has allowed me and many other people achieve healthy new skin. The trick is to make sure that we don’t overuse them and that we are gentle with our application. We want to encourage the stimulation of new skin cells and the loosening of the old without actually clawing our skin off. Remember with acne prone skin, being rough will only cause more damage and sensitivity.

One more point on facial scrubs and acne prone skin. Facial scrubs will help remove the dead skin, dirt and other debris that often clog pores and clogged pores are a cause for acne and pimples.

What should I look for in a facial scrub?

Here are 3 key things that can make all the difference on our skin care regime:

The particles contained in the scrub should not be too large. If the granules are too large, we risk irritating and scratching our skin. The idea size we are looking for is something that is just large enough to loosen the surface layer of the skin without leaving red marks behind but small enough to ensure thorough coverage. I strong recommend a scrub that contains micro granules as well as fine particles like clay.

Our scrub formula should be soap free. Soap can be very irritating to the skin as it strips our skin of its natural oils leaving it dry and sensitive.

We should select products that contain a high concentration of plant extracts, oils and essential oils.  These extracts will promote hydration, skin repair, regeneration and healing. Just like the rest of us, our skin cells need a variety of vitamins and antioxidants to grow healthy and strong, and the highest quality comes from nature itself.

How often should I use a facial scrub?

There isn’t one rule as to how often to exfoliate. However, I highly recommend that we don’t do it more than twice a week. We need to make sure we give our skin time to regenerate and repair. If we scrub it on a daily basis, we may be aggravating our skin condition rather than treating it. Let’s leave our face cleanser do the daily work for us and only use our facial scrub to do the heavy lifting once a week. This will ensure we are not to rough on our skin.

How fast does it work?

As I have mentioned before, using natural skin care ingredients are extremely effective but they do work from the deeper layers of the skin, therefore we must be patient and manage our expectations accordingly. It will take time for the effects to surface to the top layers of our skin. The quality of our facial scrub plays a massive role too in the results we can expect to see. If it is filled with synthetic ingredients that act as fillers then that means there are less room for the good stuff and we aren’t getting as much out of our facial scrub as we should.

We can expect to see minor improvements along the way, but it may take a few months of frequent use to see awesome results and with dedication; such as skin regimen can really improve skin problems such as acne, scarring, and wrinkles. We can definitely get amazing skin by incorporating a good facial scrub into our routine.
